Local Area
Broomton Farm self catering holiday cottages lie just inland from the Moray Firth at Auldearn, only 7 miles each way to either coastal towns of Nairn and Forres, yet only around 22 miles from Inverness, the Capital of the Scottish Highlands, making Broomton an ideal base from which to tour the Highlands.
The Coastal Trail:
White, sandy beaches and spectacular coastal scenery are found at Nairn, Findhorn (just outside Forres) Burghhead, Hopeman and Roseisle, all within easy reach of Broomton Farm. Both Nairn and Findhorn are good locations for spotting the famous Moray Firth Dolphins.
For Families:
Nairn is particularly suited for families as it provides children’s play area, adventure course, putting green and swimming pool all within close proximity to the beach on the other side of the dunes. Other activities for children are found at nearby Landmark Adventure Park (Carrbridge), Bogbain Adventure and Heritage Farm just outside Inverness, and within Inverness itself at the Rollerbowl and Aquadome as well as Bught Park that offers a miniature railway plus play equipment suitable for different ages.
Outdoor Activities/Sports:
We are superbly located for walking/cycling tours with many different routes to chose from.
The Cairngorms National Park is an easy drive away with spectacular mountain scenery and outdoor activities. The Cairngorm Mountain Ski centre offers snow sports between December and April, even into May if the snowy conditions persist! The mountain funicular is well worth a visit during the summer for the spectacular views from the top of the mountain. The Strathspey Steam Railway is always a huge hit with kids looking for the Harry Potter experience!
Nairn also has an excellent golf course which has hosted several major championships.
The Castle Trail:
Just a few miles away, lies Cawdor Castle - the most romantic castle in the Highlands set in beautiful gardens and providing restaurant, shops, nature trails, golf course and events programme. The events section is well worth a look, as the castle hosts many outdoor plays, historic car rallies and bigger events. The National Trust for Scotland run Brodie Castle is the ancient seat of the clan Brodie and displays a fine selection of period furniture, porcelain and paintings, less than two miles from the farm. If you fancy some retail therapy, why not visit to Brodie Country Fare - located just a mile from Brodie Castle.
We are lucky to also be very close to several other places of significant historical interest, including
- CULLODEN – the famous battlefield that saw the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rising in 1746.
- SPYNIE PALACE - impressive medieval residence of the Bishops of Moray
- HUNTLY CASTLE – famed for its heraldic sculpture
- FORT GEORGE – an outstanding, unaltered artillery fortress dating back as far as 1748
- BALVENIE CASTLE - dating back to the 13th century
- URQUHART CASTLE – the ruin of one of Scotland’s largest castles, set on the banks of Loch Ness
- ELGIN CATHEDRAL – superb remains of a beautiful 13th century cathedral with views to Spynie Palace
Eating Out:
Highly recommended, and less than two miles miles away in Brodie is the atmospheric Old Mill Inn. A firm favourite with our regulars!
Fancy some shopping & a meal? Why not try Brodie Countryfare. Word of warning though, keep the kids (and grown up kids) away from the old fashioned sweets corner!
The award winning Cawdor Tavern makes a perfect stop after a visit to the castle.
The Whisky Trail:
True connoisseurs of the water of life will greatly enjoy being in the centre of the malt whisky trail! Much of the barley produced on the farm goes directly for malting, so when visiting some of these local distilleries, you may well be tasting some Broomton barley! Nearby is DALLAS DHU HISTORIC DISTILLERY – see how whisky was made in the 19th century and enjoy a wee dram too!
and then there is always a choice of further distilleries to visit and sample at…….
and last but not least – Strathisla - the oldest working distillery in the Highlands.
Further Afield:
For a more leisurely day out, why not cruise Loch Ness - a variety of cruises available. In addition to Nessie spotting, come in June for the Rockness Music Festival hosting a wide variety of music and fun to suit all tastes!
Escape to the Orkney Islands for a full day tour departing from Inverness, or explore the Forests of Inverness at Glen Affric where you may be lucky and spot an Osprey.
